Coffee Service Job Training Program
The Coffee Service Job Training Program will run from four to six months and trainees will learn how to run a coffee house business by learning front of the house and back of the house roles. At orientation, new trainees will be trained by volunteers with industry experience on job skills such as how to use the coffee and nitro cold brew machines and prepare small snacks, proper safety and sanitation protocol, and duties and responsibilities of wait staff. In addition, trainees will learn hard and soft job skills needed for gainful employment in any job sector in the event that they choose to work in another field after leaving the Coffee Services Job Training Program. When a trainee is nearing the end of the program, they will begin meeting with staff to develop a resume, cover letter, and job interview skills. Trainees can elect to stay for another three months to learn management skills such as inventory and communicating with suppliers, hiring and training new employees, scheduling, conflict resolution skills, customer service skills, planning and delegation skills, and help to maintain relationships with local businesses and organizations.
How does this provide value?
A job is a coping skill. It allows a trainee to meet new people and potentially expand their support network. It also helps people to structure their day. And for those who have gaps in their employment history due to addiction, a job at the Black Cat Coffee House (BCCH) will help an individual to rebuild their resume with newly learned skills in a field that is expected to grow faster than average over the next eight years and gives them a professional reference for future jobs (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2022).
According to Yildiz (2015), “Sustained employment is associated with reduced health care use and cost and increased levels of self-esteem and satisfaction. As traditionally known, work may play an important role in the process of recovering by engaging a person into a feeling of being able to work as a sort of existence.” In addition, researchers with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA, 2021) have found that having a job is a priority for individuals in recovery and it is associated with reduced instances of relapse, less criminal activity and parole violations, improvement in the quality of life, and more successful transition into the community after treatment.
How will we measure success?

How will we measure success?
- In the first year, four employees will complete the Coffee Service Training Program and one individual will go on to pursue management skills training.
- In the first year, 50% of employees will obtain a permanent job after finishing the training program.
